Facebook is more than just a site to connect with friends; it can also be a powerful marketing tool for businesses. The site has half a billion users and thousands of online communities. With Facebook, it’s not only possible to reach customers, it’s also possible to specifically target population subsets who’d be most interested in your product. However, marketing with Facebook requires more than simply creating a profile; you have to smartly represent your business and make connections while on the site. Here are a few tips to make the most out of Facebook.

Create your Facebook profile page, making it a comprehensive representation of your business. If you’re a brick and mortar business, include your address and contact information along with a website. Specify the category that your business operates under, and use Facebook’s Markup Language to customize your page. You can add Flash animations, subscription forms or other digital features.

Add photos. Your photos should show off what your business offers. If you’re a clothing company, feature photos of your most popular products. If you’re a dog sitter, add photos of happy customers. Your profile picture should be the best picture you have on hand. Don’t be afraid to make your profile picture large; Facebook allows photos up to 200pix wide x 600pix high.

Create contests for your fans to participate in; this will allow them to interact directly with you. For instance, if your business is a concert venue, post a trivia question about a band that’s coming to play. The first one to respond to the question can win tickets to the event.
